Kamal Chunchie
Middlesex University students explore the life of Kamal Chunchie – including his time fighting for Britain during the First World War.
Kamal Chunchie was born in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and went on to serve in the Middlesex Regiment of the British Army during the First World War. He also established the ‘Coloured Men’s Institute’ in London’s Canning Town.
‘Hidden Heroes: Soldiers From The Empire’ is a Heritage Lottery funded project by Eastside Community Heritage and Middlesex University. Descendants of black and Asian soldiers who served in the regiment were found across the globe and interviewed to discover more memories of their ancestors.
