The first trade unions in the country were formed at this time; British Guiana had become radically politicised.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- \/col -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col4-2 last tb-column \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<!-- module text -->\n<div id=\"text-4702-2-1-1\" class=\"module module-text text-4702-2-1-1   \">\n\t\n\t\t\n\t<h3><em>Guyana <br \/><\/em><\/h3>\n\t<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->\n\n<!-- module text -->\n<div id=\"text-4702-2-1-2\" class=\"module module-text text-4702-2-1-2   \">\n\t\n\t\t\n\t<p>On 8 July 1915, at the age of 20, Brown joined up at the recruitment office in Holloway, London. He trained under the 21<sup>st<\/sup> and 28<sup>th<\/sup> Battalions of the Middlesex Regiment. He first trained in Aldershot, followed by a camp in Northampton. Brown was admitted to hospital for syphilis on 25 October for 24 days.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- \/col -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  \n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<!-- \/row_inner -->\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<!-- \/row_inner_wrapper -->\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<!-- \/module_row -->\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t<!-- module_row -->\n\t\t\t<div data-gutter=\"gutter-default\" class=\"themify_builder_row module_row module_row_3 clearfix gutter-default\" >\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"builder_row_cover\"  ><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row_inner_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row_inner\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-full first tb-column \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<!-- module text -->\n<div id=\"text-4702-3-0-1\" class=\"module module-text text-4702-3-0-1   \">\n\t\n\t\t\n\t<h3><em>Intolerable Life<br \/><\/em><\/h3>\n\t<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->\n\n<!-- module text -->\n<div id=\"text-4702-3-0-2\" class=\"module module-text text-4702-3-0-2   \">\n\t\n\t\t\n\t<p>On 15 March 1916 after having been in training for over half a year, Brown wrote a petition of complaint along with six other \u2018coloured\u2019 soldiers from Guiana, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Gold Coast (Ghana), and the West Indies, concerning their \u2018intolerable lives\u2019 as black soldiers while in training.<\/p><p>The petition caused some debate at the Colonial Office, memos written at the time show how different civil servants felt about the case . . .<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cNeither the War Office nor we can\u2019t help the householders\u2019 dislike of having black men billeted on them.\u201d<\/h5><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cI am very sorry for these men.\u201d<\/h5><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cI think it must be recognised that these men give more trouble than they are worth.\u201d<\/h5><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThe War Office would really assist us by laying down a hard and fast rule that coloured men are not acceptable for British regiments.\u201d<\/h5><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cIt is, I think, clear that this petition is the work of some (possibly well-meaning) busy-body: its literary style is not that to be expected from the signatories.\u201d<\/h5><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2018I am aware that we induced them to accept Ceylonese in certain regiments: but that was a special case and [some] are moderately white in aspect.\u2019<\/h5><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Nothing yet is known of what became of Brown or his black comrades, except that three months afterwards Brown was given 20 days detention for absenting himself without official leave (AWOL). In July last <strong>we left our Native lands to come to England<\/strong> <strong>and join the Colours<\/strong>. We offered ourselves and were accepted, being drafted into the 11th Middlesex. This Regiment some months ago was sent to Aldershot and we with about <strong>ten other dark men <\/strong>were left behind and eventually sent to Northampton to the Reserve Battalion18th Middlesex. <strong>Our life here is intolerable.<\/strong> <strong>The men refuse to associate or have any intercourse with us<\/strong>: they will not sleep with us and it is therefore extremely difficult for us to obtain billets: householders do not want us and on one occasion <strong>two of us had to stay in the streets all night.<\/strong> We apparently are regarded and <strong>certainly are treated as an inferior race<\/strong> and no pains are taken to disguise aversion to us: it <strong>is difficult to enumerate the many grievances we have to bear<\/strong>, they are so many and continuous, but as before stated our life is intolerable and now we know that we <strong>are not wanted by our comrades<\/strong>.
