They also found living relatives to interview. And I think I\u2019ve left quite a bit of my blood in the soil of France!\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Tarun Maninal, Rudra\u2019s grandson<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Agit Anil Rudra, or \u2018Jick\u2019 to his friends, was born in Delhi, India in 1896. Rudra enlisted himself\u00a0 in the Universities and Public Schools Brigade, a part of Lord Kitchener\u2019s Army with his Ceylonese passport. Little is known of his early life in Asia, except that he once worked as a police inspector in Singapore. Chunchie was inspired to travel to London to join the Middlesex Regiment, seeing action in the trenches.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">During the war, Chunchie was gassed and injured, and sent to Malta to recuperate. There he played cricket, his biggest passion, one which he continued after the war as the only \u2018coloured\u2019 member of the Essex Gentlemen\u2019s Cricket Club. Sixty altogether. Of course they weren\u2019t all bad smashes. Some were only forced landings but even these usually meant some nasty bumps. But it was good fun.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Harry O\u2019Hara, during WW1<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Harry O\u2019Hara was born in Tokyo in 1891, but left to work as a journalist in India. When the war broke out, he joined the 34<sup>th<\/sup> Sikh Pioneers. Later, after serving with the Gurkhas and suffering three injuries, he was transferred to the Middlesex Regiment.After qualifying as a pilot, he was then transferred the Royal Flying Corps. He promptly put me down as Roman Catholic.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Kish Naoroji<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Karesat Ardeshir Dadebhai Naoroji, otherwise known as \u2018Kish\u2019, was born in Cutch, India in 1893. His grandfather was Sir Dababhoy Naoroji, the first Indian M.P. in Britain and founder of the Indian National Congress. Kish\u2019s privileged background allowed him to study at the best schools in India, and on to Cambridge in 1912. When the war broke out Kish was 21. He enlisted into the Universities and Public Schools Brigade, expecting to become an officer.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">After leading his men as a Sergeant during the Somme, Kish was deemed \u2018unfit for service.\u2019 He travelled back to Britain and become one of the pioneer Indian officers of the Indian Army, much like his friend A.A. In 1905 riots broke out in the major towns of British Guiana (now known as Guyana) after \u2018coloured\u2019 inhabitants were dissatisfied with the standard of living in the country. Born in the Punjab on the Indian subcontinent in around 1878, he was a surprisingly old, 36, at the start of the war.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Singh must have been a man of at least comfortable wealth. He resided at 70 Stowe Road in London\u2019s Shepherd&#8217;s Bush and lived alone with an 18-year old Ceylonese servant. He married his wife Dobby, a native Londoner in Poplar, London in 1912.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Singh became a private of the 5<sup>th<\/sup> battalion of the Middlesex regiment. He was discharged in 1917 to 33 Miller Crescent, Edinburgh. Little is known about him, but he was photographed standing as a \u2018black mascot\u2019 in his battalion. He is compared to another battalion\u2019s mascot: a black cat.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is thought that Drummer Roberts was on board the ship Tyndareus, which was struck by a mine near South Africa during its passage to Hong Kong. King George V praised the Middlesex Regiment\u2019s discipline and courage during the attack.
